95 years old, but young at heart

“I wouldn’t say I have a favourite; I turn it on just to watch and listen to anything.”

The veteran anti-apartheid activist could not have imagined that his humble beginnings, selling fat cakes to overworked coal miner workers in Musina, Limpopo, would propel him to become one of the finest literary minds in the country.Daniel Donald Dliwayo With an innate fondness for literature and writing, he says teaching the two subjects was second nature, as these were important for the education of the black child. His desire for the advancement of black children saw him establish a bursary scheme, the Rand Bursary Fund, with close associate and fellow teacher Thamsanqa Kambule.

“I wore it to school and began my day at 7am – the children of some of my colleagues couldn’t believe it was me,” Dliwayo says. Outside the classroom, Dliwayo says, he had an undying love for football, which saw him being elected as a deputy chairperson of Soweto giants Orlando Pirates in the 1970s. “Those days, stadiums used to the packed, so we would organise buses for fans who lived in far away places, and the same buses would make a detour on political missions.”
