Recent data from Lightstone Auto revealed that crossovers are quickly becoming the most popular body type bought by younger new car buyers however, there is still room for sedans.

Despite crossovers taking the lead as South Africa’s auto body shape of preference, sedans still offer an affordable and reliable option for drivers.

South Africans also love their bakkies and small SUVs; however, these all come with a hefty price tag.With the average monthly salary of an employee in the formal non-agricultural sector being R24,578, this would best allow for a car priced at R300,000 or below – the price range of a handful of ‘bang-for-a-buck’ sedans.

The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa latest statistics for September 2022 have shown that people are still wanting to buy cars despite consistent rate hikes and inflation taking their toll.
