Five people have died after a collision between a minibus taxi and a bus occurred on the corner of Sonata and Symphony Way in Belhar, Cape Town on Sunday morning:

Three men and two women, aged between 25 and 40, died on the scene, while ten others were rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.It is alleged that the white Quantum taxi, from Delft, drove along Sonata Way, jumped a red traffic light and then collided with the Golden Arrow bus travelling on Symphony Way.

Two passengers on the bus were treated for minor injuries at the scene, while the bus driver was treated for knee injuries and shock, according toER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said several people were entrapped when paramedics arrived on the scene of the accident. ‘Medics assessed the patients and found five people had already succumbed to their numerous injuries. Nothing could be done for them and they were declared dead,’ said Meiring.

Police spokesperson, Captain Frederick van Wyk, said the SAPS Accident Response Unit attended the accident scene. ‘According to reports, the white Quantum taxi came from Delft and drove along Sonata Way and the Golden Arrow bus was travelling on symphony Way direction Stellenbosch arterial. The collision happened in the intersection [and] investigation is ongoing,’ said van Wyk.Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stop at 08600 1011.
