Three children, aged five, seven and nine, drowned in two separate incidents in the Free State and North West over the weekend.

Brothers Nadio, five, and Marshall Pienaar, seven, of Welkom drowned on Saturday while an unidentified nine-year-old boy from the North West drowned on Friday.Free State police spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng said Nadio and Marshall were part of a group of boys who had gone for a swim at a mine dam at approximately 17:42 on Saturday.

"According to an eyewitness, one of them, a five-year-old boy, moved to the deeper side of the dam and struggled to come out. His older brother, seven, tried to rescue him but both of them disappeared and drowned.""The SAPS diving unit visited the scene and retrieved the two bodies."Children must refrain from swimming to places that are not safe, and also parents must know the whereabouts of their children to avoid this disaster," Thakeng added.

She added the boy jumped in the stream to swim but was swept away by the fast current into the river."A search was subsequently conducted but was discontinued as it was getting dark. Authorities resumed early on Saturday morning." Augoustides said the search continued until around 17:30 when members from the police's Air Wing spotted the child's body.

She added the discovery followed a multidisciplinary search and rescue operation in Uitkyk village that included members from the National Sea Rescue Institute and Strategic Response Unit, the police's Air Wing, divers and residents. We live in a world where facts and fiction get blurred, you have access to a world of in-depth analyses, investigative journalism, top opinions and a range of features.
