2019 ELECTIONS: Inside KZN: A tale of two presidents — greeted very differently By Aisha Abdool Karim, Rebecca Davis and Sandisiwe Shoba

On an overcast Saturday in the town of eSikhawini in northern KwaZulu-Natal, a crowd of ANC supporters gathered on the sports fields of a local college to await the arrival of President Cyril Ramaphosa.

In eSikhawini, 85-year-old Lena Dube hovered anxiously by the security fence buttressing the stage where Ramaphosa would soon appear. She was desperate to catch the president’s eye with a personal appeal.Daily MaverickI don’t have a house, even in my old age. I could die today and not know where I would be buried. I’m alone.”

But Ramaphosa acknowledged that more needed to be done, promising the people of KwaZulu-Natal that more jobs would come their way after 8 May 2019 — when foreign investors would be further convinced of the Ramaphosa administration’s popular support. But though the president’s reception was warm and respectful, there was a certain lacklustre spirit to the affair. Indeed, the audience noticeably perked up when Ramaphosa was replaced on stage by the sounds of Durban’s Gqom music duo, the Distruction Boyz. He’s a good president. I have no issue with him,” Magwaza toldigagu . He was also very in touch with the ordinary person’s needs. Compared to Cyril Ramaphosa, Zuma had many supporters. Personally, I miss him a lot.

2019 Elections - ANALYSIS: Curiouser and Curiouser – the strange case of the 2019 electionsThis has, by any standards, been a rather strange election campaign by the major parties. The ANC is riven with factionalism, the DA spends its time attacking other parties rather than putting its own message across, and the EFF is beginning to emerge as a force bigger than just one man, Julius Malema.

2019 Elections - Analysis: South Africa’s foreign affairs goes missing in action in the 2019 electionBoth candidates and parties have given short shrift to explaining their positions on South Africa’s crucial foreign and international economic policies, in the about-to-wrap-up national election. But these issues are too important to be left to a couple of lines in the parties’ respective manifestos. At the same time, however, the media may have let them all off far too lightly to address the needs of voters. Elections 2019: It’s all a little below par | Elections | M&GCan President Cyril Ramaphosa bring traditional ANC voters back into the fold, despite the manifest flaws of his own party, and thereby give himself more political room for manoeuvre, to drive his reform agenda more decisively in government? Nothing new, same old lies except the vibrancy of EFF and its position on land and advancing black majority interests With elections boring is good. I'll take a boring election any day. The only party to include any semblance of policy on posters is the DA.
