Bestselling author and ecommerce pioneer Tony Hsieh, former CEO of Zappos, died on Friday. Tech leaders who knew him well share stories of Hsieh's unique life and outsized impact.

The reason he started at the Quincy House Grille [the student-run, late-night food joint in their Harvard dorm] was he thought it was mismanaged. They were only selling burgers and shakes and he wanted to sell pizza because cheese was high margin. It was partly subsidized by the government. He felt the only challenge was to buy a pizza oven.

Overstock.com, Sears and Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates, became a stand-out leader in e-commerce from Las Vegas.For Hsieh, the next projects were Venture Frogs, a venture capital firm through which he invested in Zappos.com, the shoe selling site he would run as CEO through a $1.2 billion acquisition by Amazon in 2009 until his retirement in August 2020.

After a fabulous Zappos party one night, I sat intoxicated at a Vegas casino waiting for a Lyft. A small bus was loading and someone asked if we were coming. It was Tony. We spent the rest of the night drinking ferret, talking about llamas playing dice and swimming in his pool😪
