YouTube Rewind is celebrating a decade on the platform, recognizing the achievements of its content creator backbone. Starting in 2010 as a series of lists and clips from the year's top moments and creators, the series grew into a celebration of what YouTubers have accomplished.Kevin Allocca, head of culture and trends at YouTube, has been working on Rewind since the very beginning and has watched it evolve every step of the way.
"As YouTube has become more global, it has become harder to actually reflect the authentic experience for people," Allocca mused. The 2018 Rewind was universally panned by the YouTube demographic, gathering over 16 million dislikes and making it the most disliked video the platform had ever seen. The omission of important figureheads like PewDiePie and Mr.
Learning from last year's debacle, the Rewind team decided to try something new. For 2019, no celebrities, influencers or famous pets were flown out to Los Angeles for filming. Instead, it's a simple list of the year's top moments and clips, using the data Google and YouTube collect to back it up.
