Sen. John Cornyn, lead Republican negotiator for gun safety, with no apology for the $583,000 in support from the NRA, has made it clear he is against banning a category of weapons across the board. So if AR-15s fall under the protection of the Second Amendment, why not Stinger missiles, Switchblade drones, grenades and on and on?
I hope most people would think that is ridiculous, but if you let AR-15s in the room, how can you keep the others out? We have plenty of examples of those weapons being used today around the world for “the security of a free state.”The threat posed to democracy by former President Donald Trump is many times greater than the one posed by former President Richard Nixon more than 40 years ago, but the change in the political and media environment makes the messaging more difficult.
Then, there were moderates in both political parties. Today, it is basically liberal Democrats versus MAGA Republicans. Then, there were the big three — NBC, CBS and ABC — offering a balanced view of the news. Today’s social media gives us “news” dominated by Fox News that views the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol as “legitimate political discourse” and
