There are real problems that our society faces, and only through expert-level knowledge can we solve them.

From macroscopic scales down to subatomic ones, the sizes of the fundamental particles play only a small role in determining the sizes of composite structures. Whether the building blocks are truly fundamental and/or point-like particles is still not known, but we do understand the Universe from large, cosmic scales down to tiny, subatomic ones. There are so many remarkable things that we — as a species — have figured out about existence.

At least, that's how you behave if you're genuinely interested in learning the actual answer. You'll either undertake the research yourself to reach expert-level competence, where you'll learn how to perform critical tests and experiments that determine the answer, or you can learn to discern whose expertise is worth listening to and why, and then to take that expert advice. That's how you gain meaningful knowledge.

This is not an easy situation to be in, regardless of your education or background. It's human nature to want to save face and appear like we knew the right answer all along. But, if we're being honest with ourselves, that isn't a real solution. The HPV vaccine is very safe, and most people don’t have any problems or side effects. Studies have shown the vaccine caused HPV rates to decline 64 percent among teenaged girls ages 14 to 19, and 34 percent among women ages 20 to 24. Yet vaccination rates remain low for HPV and many other preventable diseases, causing thousands of unnecessary illnesses and ill effects. When we deceive ourselves about the severity of an injury, the injury typically gets worse.

I think a huge point of logic when listening to experts is the concept of 'peer review'. Other experts who hated Einstein and his theories even had to admit he was right. That is hard to ignore in science. They aren't all colluding, they are competing.

I empathize, and it sucks that some humans are smarter than most, and see the world for what it it is, and make cool stuff that stupid people crave... But it's also fun to say the Earth is flat.
