Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday praised President Joe Biden’s federal response to the collapse of a condo building in the coastal suburb of Surfside — providing a moment of bipartisan bonhomie between the leader of the Democratic Party and a rising star within Donald Trump’s GOP.
The governor went on to assess that cooperation between local, state and federal partners seeking to manage the fallout from the building collapse “has been great,” telling Biden: “You guys have not only been supportive at the federal level, but we’ve had no bureaucracy.
More recently, however, DeSantis’ surging popularity within the Republican Party — attributed largely to his state's pandemic response and combative style — has prompted the governor to take steps aimed at avoiding Trump’s wrath and deflecting speculation about a potential 2024 presidential run. And although the White House and the governor’s office have clashed over coronavirus vaccine distribution and other priorities, such signs of disagreement were not on display when the president visited Surfside on Thursday.
