It’s about to get a lot easier to find out what jobs in New York City pay, and employers aren’t happy

New York City will require employers to list the minimum and maximum salaries on job postings starting this spring, a mandate that is already drawing opposition from business groups.

Under a new city law that takes effect May 15, companies will need to disclose the expected salary range that an employer “in good faith” believes it would pay for each advertised job, promotion or transfer opportunity.

Our HR department (not in NY) has gotten really shady the last few years and no longer discloses pay ranges for any jobs. Want to apply for a job? Great! Oh, you want to know what the pay range is? Apply, and if offered the job, we'll let you know what we think you're worth.

Frankly, I appreciate this and wish it would go nationwide. I HATE sitting for an interview with my years of experience, as well as certifications, only to find they want to offer me $30K LESS than my current employer for a higher position than I'm currently in.

I think transparency in this area can only benefit employees and job seekers more. No reason why information should be kept from people trying to make important decisions regarding their careers.

Either you’re predisposed to negotiate or you’re not. I wouldn’t be surprised if this backfires and just amplifies people’s natural dispositions—the aggressive negotiators, who tend to be male, driving to the top of the range in hiring and lobbying for raises more doggedly.

“Oh no we can’t finesse candidates anymore”
