The consumer review platform has publicly aligned itself with the Black Lives Matter movement

Starting today, Yelp will display warnings if restaurants and other businesses are associated with racist conduct, the review platformThe change comes amid ongoing protests and bolstered advocacy against racism, anti-Blackness, and police brutality, sparked in part by the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and other Black people this year.

Where the platform could potentially run into difficulty is adjudicating what exactly constitutes “racist behavior,” a question whose answer may vary wildly depending on whom one asks. “We unequivocally reject racism, whether it’s happening on or off the platform,” a company spokesperson said. Yelp’s full statement is as follows:

Another tool for people who use Yelp as a weapon and usually have no clue what they’re talking about. Restaurants need help, not more ways to knock down the restaurants holding on by their fingertips.
