A Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper is dead after a serious accident in Marysville Saturday morning.

FILE - State Route 99, just north of 156th St. SW in Lynnwood, was closed for a couple of hours in the morning of Dec. 20, 2023, after a Community Transit bus hit and killed a 34-year-old man who was crossing the street outside of a crosswalk, according to the Washington State Patrol. A Washington State Patrol trooper is dead after a serious accident in Marysville Saturday morning.

According to officials, the trooper was tragically killed when they were hit by a motorist just before 3 a.m. on southbound Interstate 5 near 136th Street North.A heavy law enforcement and first-responder presence is at the scene and is expected to continue for many hours, according to WSP. Details regarding what led up to the crash that killed the trooper are still unknown. WSP is planning to hold a press conference later with additional details later in the day.

WSP is asking drivers to avoid the area and find alternate routes until the scene is cleared. As of 10:37 a.m., traffic backups are reaching Stanwood.
