The DOJ is examining whether Wirecard played a role in an alleged bank-fraud conspiracy tied to marijuana sales, say people familiar with the probe

By Rebecca Davis O’Brien Close Rebecca Davis O’Brien , Juliet Chung Close Juliet Chung and Patricia Kowsmann Close Patricia Kowsmann July 8, 2020 1:27 pm ET The Justice Department is examining whether scandal-plagued German payment company Wirecard AG WDI -11.75% played a critical role in an alleged $100 million bank-fraud conspiracy connected to an online marijuana marketplace, according to people familiar with the investigation.

The company hasn’t been charged in the U.S. bank-fraud matter and hasn’t been identified in any public court filings. When one of the two businessmen—a German e-commerce consultant—was arrested and detained in California in March, a Wirecard executive offered to help post his bail, court filings show.

The U.S. case appears to relate to Wirecard’s work in emerging markets, its banking arm and its payment processing services. U.S. authorities’ interest in Wirecard indicates an investigation of far larger scope than suggested in the initial charges involving the marijuana marketplace. In a search-warrant application for Mr. Weigand’s electronic devices, filed in the case, an FBI agent said the government was seeking evidence of charges including bank fraud, money laundering and conspiracy.

Just legalize weed this is so dumb.

They are not 'allowed' to use banks, so wtf. Oh right Barr isn't a fan of the ghanja.

well you don't let them use banks soooo

bullshit. give marijuana businesses direct access to bank accounts and they won't need to jump through ridiculous hoops to pay employees, taxes, etc.
