Authorities say the helicopter's owner called for help about 45 minutes after the chopper was due back from a tour of Kauai's Na Pali Coast on Thursday evening.
Searchers began looking for the helicopter carrying a pilot and six passengers after it was reported overdue from a tour of Kauai’s Na Pali Coast on Thursday evening. Two passengers are believed to be minors, the Coast Guard said.The helicopter company, identified as Safari Helicopters, contacted the Coast Guard about 6 p.m. Thursday to say the aircraft was about 30 minutes overdue, authorities said.
The Eurocopter AS350 lifted off from the town of Lihue, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.Clouds and rain at the scene limited visibility to 4 miles , with winds at 28 mph . Friday’s forecast predicted winds of about 23 mph . The Na Pali Coast is one of the most dramatic and sought-after destinations in Hawaii was featured in the film “Jurassic Park.” Towering mountains with deep ravines and huge waterfalls make up the interior of the uninhabited state park. Red rock cliffs with thick jungle canopies rise from the Pacific Ocean to over 4,000 feet high.

That makes 17 crashes in 4 years. I lived on Oahu for 3 years & I would NEVER do a helicopter tour knowing what I know. Between dangerous conditions that are often times ignored, the weather that can change rapidly, & poor maintenance, you couldn’t pay me to do one.
When will they release the names of the passengers and pilot?
This is so upsetting. I hope that they are found, at least to being peace to the families and friends of these people.

I’ve never had a desire to take a copter ride but I imagine in Kauai the vistas must be incredible. I was there 3 weeks ago, I can tell you the winter months bring strong wind/rain &the height the copters fly to w/gusts and updrafts seems v dangerous. RIP poor souls.
