WOW Air joins the growing ranks of failed budget airlines, leaving competing airlines to try to help return stranded passengers with rescue fares.

Stranded passengers set to travel with Icelandic airline Wow, wait in line at Iceland's international airport in Keflavik, Thursday March 28, 2019. Icelandic budget airline WOW Air ceased operations on Thursday, stranding passengers across two continents. The airline told passengers there would be no further flights and advised them to check flights with other airlines for ways to reach their destinations.

The Icelandic airline had a near-death experience last year, and sought a merger with Icelandair, which may have beat a hasty retreat after looking at WOW’s financials. “A ‘rescue fare’ is a discounted airfare that member airlines of the International Transport Association offer to passengers stranded in Europe by an airline bankruptcy,” according to Robert Condina, Security Director of Operations at International SOS, the world's largest medical and travel security services firm.

Don’t Panic: Stay calm and be as friendly as possible to those helping you find alternate accommodations. Don’t let your emotions get the best of you because in most cases, it only makes the situation at hand worse.

After WOW Air Collapse, Is It Time To Strengthen Consumer Protections?Once again, an airline collapse has left thousands of travelers stranded and others holding worthless tickets that were sold up to the last minute. Should airlines be blocked from ticket sales when their future is uncertain and required to have insurance to get passengers back home if they fail? Ya think Frustrating that whenever corporate evolution and Darwinism takes place, the goto solution is government. The billionaire class says NO. Maybe some day the voters will be pissed off enough to say NO to the 'conservative, too-fucking-bad-for-you' brand of politics. I am sure you are well aware of that.

What to do if you have a Wow airline ticketWow Air, the low-cost Icelandic carrier that gave us $99 fares from the U.S. to Iceland, has ceased flying, leaving thousands of customers stranded. Travel app Hopper has promised to reimburse customers, but what do you do otherwise? You can sue them, but that will likely cost more than the price of the ticket. If you win, good luck collecting any money from WOW. My sister was stranded alone in Berlin when airberlin did this. Thanks to AerLingus she made it home. ..go figure- you'd think Iceland would be such a big draw...
