Running a small movie theater during Covid is hard. So is changing prices. “Maybe the way to win customers back is not to try something different.”

A 10-screen movie theater in Woodhaven, Mich., needed help, fast. After closing for 15 months during the pandemic, it reopened this past July, and its owner needed a way to stand out. So Jon Goldstein decided to radically change the pricing plan. Convincing customers to embrace it would be harder than he expected.

For $20 during the week—$25 on weekend evenings and other peak times—adults received a movie ticket plus a wristband entitling them to unlimited popcorn, pizza, chicken tenders, soda, candy and other special menu items. Tickets for the show alone sold for $12.

78% of Americans are metabolically unhealthy, is this a plot to get to remaining ones?

Unlimited food No wonder so many unhealthy people died from the Chinese virus!!

I will not—ever. Add the gouging at the concession stand, and the risks due to virtually NO COVID protections based on my experience. Regal Cinemas LIES on their website about what they’re doing, and you’ve lost THIS customer if prices increase over where they were pre-COVID.

Yeah cuz the one thing Americans need to do more of is sit around for hours eating candy and popcorn.

No.

Add a fast food vendor, Add Old time candy or candy by the pound🍬 😋, add wine 🍷 and beer 🍺. Also run binge screenings of cable favorites like Lost, game of thrones etc, add limited screenings of old fav movies from the 80s, 90s etc... There is so much more I can think of.

Fwiw: No 😂

Movie theater “food” Is a contradiction

$25 is not enough for unlimited food, unless you are counting on people being in diabetic comas.

Theaters have been open in Texas since summer of 2020 and I’ve been going ever since.

As if obesity weren't already an issue in this country. Sitting and mindlessly eating while watching movies now I prefer watching at home with friends.

I’d love to see more drive-in theatres open!

How about booze? Asking for a friend…

Theaters don’t make as much $ from box office as you may think, particularly from a blockbuster. It gets better the more weeks a movie stays in the theater. If theaters go away you can be assured that the cost of your streaming services will go up dramatically.

dave_crave new nap time spot lol but the free popcorn!!

Are you promoting your paywall?

Just gimme a channel changer to skip the have your birthday here ads and be able to pause and rewind when Karen in the row behind me wants to question every scene and discuss the answer.

does that deal come with a sneaky shot in the ass?

ACTUAL REAL FOOD instead of candy or popcorn? Love it

So expensive. Crazy cost of food. No thanks

Theaters want between $18 for standard or $30 for great audio video for each seat to see the new James Bond. If we go, we’ll bring food and drink and not thing twice about it OR just wait for it to hit Netflix/HBO/Prime I like theaters but not worth that

Because Americans aren't fat enough. SMH.

nathanfielder go help these guys

Exiting theater with “extra” consumables stuffed in jackets, backpacks and purses - yeah sure, sounds profitable. (🤷‍♂️)

make movies cheaper.

Unlimited food? That’s gross.

Yes

Too late, movie theaters are dying . They are condemned to disappear… maybe in 3 years from now, no more. 2017 was the last I went to the movies, and I am not coming back. Long live Netflix!!!

Unlimited food? Why is corporate America's answer to any social problem 'just make people fatter'?

I’ll stay home with my $treaming movie apps and all the snacks and food I want. Dirty, smelly, noisy theaters.. um…nope.

Just what this country needs - more food

Nope! I like the monthly subscription for unlimited movies at $25 a month. The food shouldn’t be unlimited how much can you really eat at the movies? They want to keep people unhealthy with food.

make movies cheaper.

With the obesity levels in this country.. probably just don’t charge an arm and a leg for the food they do purchase.. ? Rather pay more for just the ticket.. sad, unlimited food..? No thanks. Bad for all.

Not if I have to take my mask off!

Unlimited food in theaters? Isn’t our populace already facing an obesity crisis?

No

Eating a messy burger in the dark is not for everyone.

Require proof of vaccination and mask while not eating and get good hepa air cleaning systems. Limit the number of folks in each theater and open the door to let air in between each showtime. That might help.

No

I wouldnt

No they wouldn’t. Geez, you think we’re all made out of money? People are suffering now.

No way

Raise prices and reduce service like the Post Office. Apparently a 2021 way of winning customers. FireDeJoy

I have a better movie theater in my home; I can control the volume to what I like, temperature, food selection, have privacy and quiet and don’t have to risk getting sick.

I LOVE going to the cinema. Its unfortunate that folks won't vax & mask, because I wanna go back to watching movies on the big screen. I'd pay more to get an all day pass I there was such a thing. Refills of popcorn & soda. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Take my nieces & nephew with me.

Nope.

Uh, no. I don't have an eating dosirder and have no plans to become bulimic

If you want to weigh 400 pounds, then eat unlimited theater food.

I just paid $17 ( senior) to see No Time To Die yesterday. Popcorn and a Dr. Pepper (served to me) including tip was $24.

Just what Americans need - pay a huge amount and eat a huge amount of unhealthy “food”. I would avoid that place like the horror show that it is creating.

No. I only go when there’s something a grandkid wants to see on a big screen. We share nachos and leave it at that.

Have small businesses in your community shaken up their business model? Idk but this is a novel idea. Might be worth a try in small markets.

Boycotting ANY BUSINESS that mandates vax or mask. Plenty of other places to spend MY money!!

What if it's an obsolete format where it's time for let it die with dignity?

Most Murican solution ever.

I can’t stand people eating in movie theaters

Time to create booths with Plexi glass that side up and down in between seats

Movie theaters are obsolete!

Venom 2 was not worth $20 to see.

Hey. Here’s a take, fuck movie theatres and their over inflated prices. No one wants to go to movies anymore, or at least many fewer people do than before Covid. Digital is better. My house is better. No amount of AMC commercials w/Nicole Kidman will make me go back to a theatre.

Hollywood producing better movies would help.

Probably the best thing would be for liberals to allow small businesses to succeed instead of trying to kill them all off so that its easier for you to control large corporations.

wow

Would make far more sense for cinemas to go subscription based so people would go much more often and then be more willing to buy the 1000% profit popcorn and also bring back the intermission for childrens films and bum-numbing No Time to Die

Would be a disaster. People would be showing up to the theater and trying to walk out with everything they can carry.

I completely agree, I would start with properly cleaning and fumigating the theater and getting rid of all the bed bugs first.

As it is if I go to the movies with my family it costs me over $100 to see a movie I can stream later at home at a much cheaper price. It's not worth it when Biden's inflation is robbing me of $.
