Every World Series that is played has one or two moments that not only help shape the series, but they're often remembered for several years—or decades. The 116th World Series had one of those moments Saturday night as the Tampa Bay Rays came from behind on a bizarre play to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dodgers led by one run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and had their closer, Kenley Jansen, on the mound. The Rays had runners on first base and second. Rays outfielder Brett Phillips had two strikes on him at the plate. Phillips sliced a liner to shallow center field, which scored the tying run from second. However, Dodgers centerfielder Chris Taylor reached down for the ball, which ricocheted off his glove and bounced toward right field. Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena, who was the runner on first base, had raced around third. As the Dodgers worked the ball to the infield, Arozarena had already rounded third. Dodgers first baseman Max Muncy relayed the ball to catcher Will Smith.
Meanwhile, Arozarena had stumbled onto the ground, and he would have been out by 25-30 feet at home. However, the relay throw to Smith bounced wildly and went behind Smith, and Arozarena regained his footing and dove home safely to give the Rays a wild, unforgettable 8-7 win to even the series at 2-2.
