Woman used dead caregiver’s name to receive long-term care benefits, Attorney General says

Leoncia Hutchinson, 72, of Metuchen was indicted on insurance fraud and money laundering charges in early October after using her deceased caregiver’s name to continue receiving financial benefits, the state Office of the Attorney General announced Wednesday.

Hutchinson is accused of filing false time sheets in an effort to continue receiving long-term care payments despite knowing her caregiver was dead. She is charged with one count of second-degree insurance fraud and one count of third-degree theft by deception. She is also charged with one count each of third-degree money laundering and forgery, as well as another 12 counts of fourth-degree forgery.

A grand jury handed down the indictment on Oct. 3. A joint investigation involving the Attorney General’s Office and the Office of Insurance Fraud Prosecutor began after a referral from Continental Casualty Company. Hutchinson, between October 2018 and April 2019, filed forged time sheets with the dead caregivers name to Continental Casualty Company in order to receive long-term care payments, according to the news release. Hutchinson wrote checks to the dead caregiver after receiving payments from the insurance company, depositing those checks into a separate account and then transferring the money back to her account.

Hutchinson faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of second-degree insurance fraud and a fine of up to $150,000. The third-degree charges carry a three- to five-year sentence and up to $15,000 in fines, and the fourth-degree charges carry a prison sentence of up to 18 months and fines up to $10,000.If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
