Pope continued giving breaths and doing chest compression on the woman as she waited for emergency personnel to arrive at the scene. While it felt like 20 minutes, the professionals arrived much faster than that. According to the American Heart Association, about 16% of incidents regarding cardiovascular issues happen in the public, while another 74% occur at home. Bystander CPR, like what Pope did, the Association said, can increase the chance of survival.
Parashar has been teaching CPR training for 17 years. It’s a critical skill set, she said, that people will never know when they will need it and in areas like Alaska, where many are far from emergency services, those are critical skills to have.
