Felicia Pope was having a normal March day at her part-time job at the Eagle River Alaska Club, when one of her co-workers told her someone was lying unresponsive in a dressing room.

Felicia Pope is encouraging others to learn CPR after saving someone’s lifePublished: Jun. 28, 2024 at 5:11 PM AKDTANCHORAGE, Alaska - Immediately, Pope jumped into action, instructing someone to grab an AED machine and another person to call 911, as Pope began doing chest compression on the woman.

Pope continued giving breaths and doing chest compression on the woman as she waited for emergency personnel to arrive at the scene. While it felt like 20 minutes, the professionals arrived much faster than that. According to the American Heart Association, about 16% of incidents regarding cardiovascular issues happen in the public, while another 74% occur at home. Bystander CPR, like what Pope did, the Association said, can increase the chance of survival.

Parashar has been teaching CPR training for 17 years. It’s a critical skill set, she said, that people will never know when they will need it and in areas like Alaska, where many are far from emergency services, those are critical skills to have.
