Hanging around the powerhouse WIXY 1260 AM radio station in Cleveland, always with her camera at the ready, the talented tween took a photo of pop stars Sonny and Cher, who were visiting Cleveland on a promotional tour.
Her photos are still often featured in music-related segments on television, including the BBC, Bravo, VH1 and A&E. And her work is part of the permanent collections of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the prestigious Smithsonian Museum of American History. “Inside I’m still the young, enthusiastic person that I was when I was discovering music and discovering photography,” she says. “And that’s the little person that lives inside me that still gets a kick out of going to a show or doing an event. And I get joy from that. It’s also very nice when you realize that other people have been appreciating your work for all those years.”
But Macoska is undeterred. She is still shooting new photos at concerts and working on a variety of other projects for private clients. She sells prints of her classic photos on her) on a pair of photo books, “All Access Cleveland: The Rock and Roll Photography of Janet Macoska” and “Bruce Springsteen: Live in the Heartland.” They are working on a new book together on a book about Stanley.for inspiring her love of photography.
She once got mooned by an uncooperative Rod Stewart and even took a bottle of Jack Daniels to the cranium at a Toledo Kiss concert. “And several weeks later I got a letter from Switzerland and I didn’t know anybody there and I opened it up and David had written a handwritten letter thanking me for the present, and , ‘Sorry for being so tardy replying to you.’“It was just like a little schoolboy letter. Just a nice thank you letter. And it’s David Bowie and it’s happened like that,” she said, still sounding a little surprised.
The book, tentatively titled “Michael Stanley: Favorite Son” will feature her photographs of Stanley performing and other moments, such as throwing the first pitch at a Cleveland baseball game.
