With Her First Grammy Nomination, Mickey Guyton Is Changing the Face of Country Music

Now Guyton, 37, is nominated for her first Grammy —making her the first Black solo female country artist to be in the running for the music industry’s biggest award.spoke to Guyton about her feelings about new parenthood, the upcoming Grammy Awards, the experience of watching people react to “Black Like Me,” and what she loves—and wishes would change—about country music.One month. What has it been like adjusting to parenthood when there’s so much going on with your career—and in the world? Nobody talks about that fourth trimester! The first two weeks after you have the baby are really challenging, or at least they were for me. Talking to a lot of women, I’m hearing that; it’s just such an adjustment. But you know, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I literally just sit there and stare at him all day and can’t believe I grew him and birthed him. He’s so sweet...but he’s crying right now. I’m based in L.A.

He was murdered in Dallas, Texas, which is my hometown, and to see something like that happen...I’ve seen police brutality happen to my own husband, who is Black, and I thought about my own experiences as a Black woman in America, and I wrote the song from that place. I never thought it would see the light of day. One of my co-writers was like, “You know, I think we just wrote one of the biggest songs of your career, and it’s going to make people very angry.
