Parts of the Appalachians could see 6 inches of snow.A quick-hitting round of snow is ending the week in parts of Tennessee, north Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia after dumping some locally heavy snow in parts of Arkansas.By January, the chance of snow in the South typically increases, as sufficiently cold air more frequently plunges through and can linger in place ahead of weather systems arriving from the West propelled by strong branches of the polar and subtropical jet streams.
The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for parts of northern Georgia, western North Carolina, southwestern Virginia and the Smoky Mountains of east Tennessee through Friday.Up to 3 inches of snow has already fallen in parts of eastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia as of early Friday and more snow is expected on Friday.
Rain changing to snow is expected to spread eastward, possibly east of Interstate 95 by Friday night. Locations that could see this change to snow include Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina.Friday's ForecastThe heaviest additional accumulations are expected in the higher elevations of the southern Appalachians, from western North Carolina into southwestern Virginia.
