“As the shuttle went into space and rose up off the ground, Ted Williams rose out of his wheelchair, just yelling, ‘That’s my friend, that’s my friend,’” Lazarus recounts. “And that kind of clinched the story being a full book, that these two had this long relationship, and there are twists and turns along the way.”
Children of some of the deceased unit members were able to supply him with roughly 200 letters their fathers wrote home during the war. Those letters provided stronger details about Williams than Glenn, Lazarus says, because Williams was a celebrity before the Korean War while Glenn was not. Williams joined the Navy’s aviation cadet program when he was drafted after Pearl Harbor, and did not see combat in World War II, says Lazarus. Instead, he was based in Florida training other cadets to fly propeller aircraft. He was reactivated after the Korean War and retrained to fly jets before he was sent to Marine Corps’ Marine Aircraft Group 33 in Korea.
“He was exceedingly aggressive and didn’t take into account that the guy flying on his wing, who was often Ted Williams, did not have much experience and was not as good a pilot as he was,” says Lazarus.
