Williamson County urged to prepare for 'normal' fire season , agencies advise readiness Fire season is almost here and Williamson County wants to make sure people are ready.

“Right now, our seasonal outlook is showing a fairly normal fire season. Of course, normal does mean to expect some fires,” Kari Hines with the Texas A&M Forest Service. The Smokehouse Creek fire that started Feb. 26 would eventually go on to be the largest wildfire in state history, burning more than a million acres. It grew quickly over just two days, so officials say having a plan in place is the first thing you should do, and you should be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice.“We ask that all residents have a plan and be prepared to evacuate, in the event of a large wildfire event.

“Remembering that the structure, itself, and the first five feet around it make the biggest difference, at least when it comes to structure protection,” said Hines.A report released this week by the investigative committee on the Panhandle wildfires found electric power poles and lines that weren't properly maintained caused those fires.
