Lower Decks' has seemingly laid the groundwork for the return of a tragic Star Trek character who was seemingly killed off during the TNG era.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary Star Trek: Lower Decks may have laid the groundwork for one of Star Trek: The Next Generation's most tragic characters to return from the dead. Mike McMahan's animated Star Trek comedy has always been inspired by his favourite TNG episode "Lower Decks", and the season 4 finale looks set to make those connections more pronounced in Star Trek continuity.

Mariner's links to Star Trek: The Next Generation go further than this when she is later kidnapped by TNG's disgraced Starfleet Academy dropout Nick Locarno . Locarno and Sito were part of Starfleet Academy's Nova Squadron, and conspired to cover up a fatal accident to protect their prospective careers. After Nick was drummed out of the Academy, Sito was determined to redeem herself in the eyes of Starfleet.

It seems unlikely that Nick Locarno has been constructing his new ship and selecting his targets without some assistance. As a fellow Starfleet Academy Cadet, there could be no better accomplice than his former Nova Squadron teammate, Sito Jaxa, whose ordeal in a Cardassian prison has turned her against Starfleet and the Federation.

Star Trek Tried To Resurrect TNG's Lower Decker Once Before It was the original intention of producer Jeri Taylor that Sito Jaxa would return later in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 7, and so she instructed that the "death" be more ambiguous. Believing that Sito surviving would undermine the episode, Michael Piller decreed that she should unequivocally be killed off.

Star Trek fans also wrote in to lament the fate of the lovable and tragic Bajoran Ensign from "Lower Decks" and so plans were afoot to resurrect the character. A story idea was formulated for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in which Sito Jaxa was revealed to be a prisoner of the Cardassians.
