Some suggest that self-driving cars will only last for 4 years at a time, meaning we'll be ending up with lots of driverless cars piled into the junk heap

, and so on, need to be factored into the longevity of the overall car, and the same applies to the computer chips and memory on-board too.

Thus, when you look at how long a car will last, you are also silently considering the cost of a new or newer car.If the cost is really high to purchase a self-driving car, you would presumably have greater incentive to try and keep an in-use self-driving car in sufficient working order.

Suppose a driverless car owner that had used their self-driving car extensively in a downtown city setting opted to sell the autonomous car to someone that lived in a suburban community. The logic might be that the self-driving car no longer was sufficient for use in a continual stop-and-go traffic environment but might be viable in a less hectic suburban locale.

On the other hand, some pundits have predicted that we won’t need as many cars as we have today, since a smaller number of ridesharing driverless cars will fulfill our driving needs, abetting the need for everyone to have a car.Another facet to consider involves the pace at which high-tech might advance and thus cause a heightened turnover in self-driving cars.

'Some suggest' well they are most likely wrong!

Then, angry at being discarded, they will rise up against us. That's about as valid as the assumptions in this article.

“... one of the fastest growing segments of car ages is the group that is 16 yrs or older, amounting to an estimated 81M such cars by the yr 2021. Of those 81M cars, around 25% are going to be more than 25 yrs old.” ...automaker rule-of-thumb: car shd last abt 8yrs or 150K mi

Pretty specious article. There are a lot of unsubstantiated assumptions in there.

Because businesses won't take them and modify them? Come on Forbes, even a child could see the business opportunity in this... Nobody buys old computers either...

This is an extremely poorly written article with an even worse title

Car companies not wanting to develop their own software because they’re idiots nd don’t see the hardware of vehicles isn’t the future. It’s like having tabs, you have a verification that your Ai is up to date like Tabs or Insurance. Update the software every year

Did anyone even say this? Article appears to assume that there will be as many AVs as current cars on the road. MaaS results in fewer cars on the road, but they’ll be driven more. Assuming nothing else changes, the number of cars scrapped per year will be much the same.
