But as Trump’s trial gets underway in the Senate, it appears, at least for now, that those predictions aren’t bearing out. According to a CNNTuesday, more than half of Americans believe Trump should be removed from office—and even more want the upper chamber to conduct a more robust trial, with witnesses and documents as Democrats have demanded.
Per the survey, 51% of voters want the Senate to convict Trump. Close to 70% want the Senate to view documents and hear from witnesses, something Trump anddoesn’t appear to be sitting well with the American public; 54% disapprove of Republicans’ approach to the proceedings. While opinions on removal continue to split hard along party lines—89% of Democrats favor conviction, compared with only 8% of Republicans—there appears to be some agreement on the actual substance of the matter.
