The Toronto International Film Festival, typically viewed as the start of awards season, is still slated for September 10. Telluride, a more intimate tastemaker, is keeping its eye on September 4.
But the Academy is likely also concerned about the actual fall release schedule. Theaters across the country have closed, with no reopening date in sight as coronavirus continues to spread from state to state. Several big-budget movies—like—have been forced to shift their spring release dates, which means the fall will likely be crammed with blockbusters, indies, and prestige Oscar bait, all fighting for audience attention.
As Deadline notes, the board of governors may potentially consider loosening Oscars eligibility requirements for 2021, since it’s unclear if most contenders will be able to have a theatrical run. The Golden Globes, which take place next January, havethis approach, with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announcing that it will allow films made available on VOD to compete for the awards so long as those films were originally intended to have theatrical releases.
Eh I mean most of the award contenders come out in late Fall, early Dec anyway so it will be fine.
