Will Andrew Yang’s meeting with fired SNL cast member Shane Gillis demand anything from white people? zakcheneyrice writes

Andrew Yang. Photo: Win McNamee/Getty Images One of the traits Andrew Yang has exhibited most consistently in his 22 months as a presidential candidate is affability in the face of cataclysm, the ability to greet crisis with a cheerful grin.

Skepticism is warranted, to be sure, and has been expressed: Jenn Fang, creator of the Asian-American advocacy blog Reappropriate, told the New York Times on Tuesday, “[Yang is] trying to let Shane Gillis off the hook so he can cater to other voters that he needs to get to the White House.

Yang’s decision to meet with Gillis is inseparable from how politics routinely require candidates and elected officials to make peace with bigotry to appease white voters, regardless of their personal disposition. This is driven largely by concerns about political survival: The evidence that criticizing bigots is a winning issue during elections remains far less compelling than the evidence that actually being a bigot wins them — as the recent history of the Republican Party attests.

Expressing concern — let alone anger — on behalf of any racial group besides white people has long been politically perilous in the U.S., but Yang is well-equipped to navigate its pitfalls.

Grace toward wrongdoers is commendable, of course, and forgiveness should be exercised liberally as a general rule. But within a politics that incentivizes forgiving white voters their trespasses for fear of alienating them, to deploy it without requiring some kind of accountability amounts to simple exoneration. Perhaps this is Yang’s goal, given his avoidance of racial and partisan tension in the past.

zakcheneyrice Yang is taking the high road 👌instead of demonizing him, he's trying to have a respectful conversation with him and hopefully explain why Shane's jokes were offensive. Yang knows Shane isn't an actual racist, he just made some really bad jokes

zakcheneyrice But hold on, the media love this forgiveness tour & nothing but tears are required from the offending White Person

zakcheneyrice Andrew Yang is not equally outraged by this outrage? Outrageous!

zakcheneyrice

zakcheneyrice Cannot wait till this guy drops out, him and his coalition are just the worst

zakcheneyrice Andrew wont demand anything, he's going to act respectfully and give this man the benefit of the doubt. Shane is a comedian and Andrew is comfortable enough in his own skin to understand that and not take offence to his comments. Fun Fact: You chose when to be offended.

zakcheneyrice Remember this?

zakcheneyrice How do you feel that while AndrewYang is taking the high road trying to replace outrage and cancel culture with empathy and forgiveness, you're trying to stir up balkanization for the sake of clicks and ad revenue? These pieces are just disgusting & I lose all respect for MSM

zakcheneyrice Anyone who thinks Yang is pandering to anyone let alone people who make racist remarks hasn’t read this. Forgiveness is great and so is his desire to actually tackle this..the author seems to have forgotten this

zakcheneyrice zakcheneyrice am not sure you are aware of UBI policy coz if you looked into it you would realise that Realism and Pragmatism are PRIMARY concerns and how exactly did Yang not challenge the racist slurs if infact he slammed them hard ?Also Yang has a policy to deal with 👇👇

zakcheneyrice zakcheneyrice explain this. You honestly believe someone choosing to forgive and who has a policy to fight such is pandering to white voters?! You honestly wrote this and lumped all white voters as being represented by Shane!

GeorgeBos7 zakcheneyrice I think you misspelled 'white supremacists look the other way when confronted with white supremacist behavior by fellow politicians'. Which (although true) has nothing to do with someone walking the path of forgiveness instead of fighting hate with hate.

zakcheneyrice WTF is this headline and what or who said Shane represents all white voters?!

zakcheneyrice Sheesh🙄 Andrew Yang is eating it for votes he won’t get, because America IS TOO RACIST (especially now, because of the DOTARD) to elect an Asian President.
