Authorities say that between 2015 and 2023, Joanne Marian Segovia, the 64-year-old director of the San Jose Police Officers’ Association, used her home and office computers, as well as phone encrypted messaging system WhatsApp, to order thousands of pills, including Zolpidem, Tapentadol and Tramadol, to her Northern California home.
Federal officials say they discovered Segovia's alleged involvement with illegally shipping drugs into the U.S. while investigating a network of people importing illicit drugs into the Bay Area. She has since been charged with attempting to unlawfully import valeryl fentanyl, a version of the drug that's considered less lethal than its more well-known counterpart, butyrfentanyl. If convicted, she could face multiple years in prison.
Authorities say they first interviewed Segovia about her alleged involvement in trafficking illegal drugs in February, after U.S. Customs and Border Protection records revealed that agents had seized thousands of opioid pills destined for her home.
