WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange sentenced to 50 weeks prison in bail-jumping case

By William Booth and William Booth London bureau chief Email Bio Follow Karla Adam Karla Adam London correspondent covering the United Kingdom Email Bio Follow May 1 at 7:08 AM LONDON — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was sentenced on Wednesday to 50 weeks in a British prison for jumping bail.

At the trial, his lawyer Mark Summers argued that Assange failed to surrender to a British court seven years ago and so violated his bail because he had a reasonable fear that if he were extradited to Sweden, he would then be extradited to the United States and even sent to Guantanamo Bay. Summers then read aloud a handwritten letter in which Assange wrote that “I apologize unreservedly” for seeking refuge at the embassy.

The courtroom was filled with journalists and about two dozen Assange supporters. After he was sentenced, some supporters shouted, “Shame!” Assange raised his fist in solidarity as he was led away.

Sorry was there a trial?

Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

Why does he look like he's in Alien: Colonial Marines? 😅

Swift justice.

Good start

More on the way

Good. Now SDNY can take their time building an espionage case against him. LockHimUp

I've known Julian Assange for 10 years. His confinement and arrest are a scandal | OpinionThe conduct of the British authorities in this case has been especially outrageous. He seems kind. If he is liable then let him be tested. He's waited too long, I think. '...beyond Mr. WikiLeaks, there is a human being: Julian Assange.' Reminder: this human being is wanted for sexual assault charges. The case is being reopened, now that there's a chance of prosecuting. He wasn't 'confined'. He walked into that embassy of his own free will, to avoid being sent to Sweden.
