Soaked in sweat, the small group of men and women sawed and tore trees limb from limb. They drilled into the soil and sprayed paint across tree trunks. In the trees about 90 km from Rondônia state capital Porto Velho, the Brazilian researchers are seeking to learn how much carbon can be stored in different parts of the world’s largest rainforest, helping to remove emissions from the atmosphere that foment climate change.
It’s rigorous and elaborate work, often in humid and insect-infested conditions, involving chainsaws, spades, corkscrews and calipers. The process also works in reverse, however. When trees are chopped down or burned - often to make way for farms or cow pastures - the wood releases CO2 back into the atmosphere.
Deforestation in the Amazon has accelerated during the administration of Jair Bolsonaro, the right-wing president of Brazil. Since he took office in 2019, at least 825 million tonnes of CO2 have been released from Brazilian Amazon deforestation.
The network’s partners use precise parameters to capture the major carbon reservoirs, including in dead plant matter and soil. For instance, if a tree is on the border of a plot, it should be measured only if more than 50% of its roots are in the plot. Each weeklong expedition costs about 200,000 reais . Sanquetta said his project has not received any money from Petrobras directly.
Better be just a few....
Every time I see this I think, Couldn't they have just taken core samples? Like geologists do. Yes it'd cause some harm to the tree but not as much as chopping it down does.
If you say 'chopping trees' in your headline someone is bound to take it the wrong way
Not necessary. I've been told by numerous politicians citing countless scientists that the science is settled.
Imagine cutting down trees to fight carbon emissions....
Burning the earth to measure the CO emission is much better.
Global environmental feedback loops require the acquisition of data and its dissemination. It takes too long to make scientific studies and it is hard to spread the information to the public in a way they can understand. We need to ACT now.
Isaiah 13
No other way left.
and then without rigour to their argument saying they emit carbon
Only when the trees are chopped down!!!!! And then they only emit what they absorbed in the first place You call this Science? These so called researchers are Brazilian Who sponsored the research?
We should be releasing carbon dioxide not storing it, co2 is a life making trace gas that has zero thermodynamic properties, tha'ts about control by a few that don't include you, gormless siphons
At the same time aren't they forcing tribes off there own land?
In the heart of Amazon forest people are dying without air. 😩
Send a DM if you need your bills paid
Sounds just like the Japanese kill whales for research Bulls$&t
Maybe they should PLANT trees instead?
Flora or fauna they make no difference to humans to be a target
But are they replanting new trees to replace the healthy trees they are choosing to murder? abortionisawomansright
And for biomass. renewables
Lol what? Don’t we need to be planting trees? Fuckin people man
Destroying trees to save the planet. Brilliant.
Don't they have any other job.

DAY 71 WAR ON TIGRAY TIGRAY LIVES MATTER!!
Is this like Japanese scientific research on Whales?
Hi , Welcome ! Will be with You in short while . I, Thank You .
Isn't that stup ? All we gotta do is destroy in da name of learning
Idiots! Let nature to heal itself! It is impossible a world without carbon, stupid scientists!

Are they replanting? The Amazon and Sahara desert somehow feed one another. The world need these trees please.
That seems sort of counterproductive.
If they plant more trees then we have hope.
