The open-office floor plan, now the standard for companies across the U.S., is supposed to encourage creative collaboration. So why are more workers putting on headphones to escape?

In the era of open-office floor plans designed to increase collaboration at the expense of privacy, more workers are finding a new space for isolation — headphones.

Experts say that contrary to concerns about fostering a team environment, listening to music at work may make workers more productive. Lesiuk collected data from employees' actual work environments over a five-week period. Out of those five weeks, participants were given three"music listening" weeks. What Lesiuk found was that State Positive Affect, or feeling content, increased from pre- to post-listening in each of the three music listening weeks, and quality-of-work was lowest during the"no music" listening period.

Spotify currently has more than 35 playlists under their"Focus" genre, including one called"Productive Morning" with over 400,000 followers and another called"Your Office Stereo" with over 150,000 followers. Spotify's"Productive Morning" uses calming, post-rock instrumentals, while"Your Office Stereo" consists of various indie and alternative selections, such as Papillon by Voyou and Darjeeling by Barrie.

Headphone use in the office predates the boom in streaming media like Spotify and Apple Music, and executives have long expressed concerns. But she added,"Organizations need to develop protocols that avoid making isolation the universal default office norm, and that encourage face-to-face interaction."

All we are saying is give silence a chance.

There is a time & a place for concentrated focus, personally I listen to Rain white noise to focus, but only when I am heads down on something, always balance time for interaction too where headphones off, no not a millennial I am more seasoned🤨 but still kicking👍

Music, podcasts, digital books, ... When you have headphones on no one should know or care what you are or are not listening to. Now if you are using the companies assets in any capacity (network, Wi-Fi, etc.) then it's another matter.

millennial millennial millennial millennial millennial millennial millennial - say it a few more times cnbc. your age is showing, and you don’t know SHIT

“Hate on”? English classes are available at very low cost on sites such as Coursera and EDX.

Who cares what they wear on their ears as long as they are working

Yeah you should

On headphones: it matters not if they feel more productive...if they cannot hear me call their name...it’s annoying...and it’s a safety hazard.....off with the headphones at work

Yes, just ignore everything in the world around you and bombard your brain. That's definitely productive 🙄 Just like everyone walking around outside ignoring traffic getting killed.

Juts gonna hate on CNBC

“A majority of office workers allowed to listen to music say it makes them feel more productive, according to recent studies.” How nice of companies to “allow” their workers to listen to music.

Opinion | The ICC’s conflict with the Trump administration shows why the court must changeThe choice is between adapting to a sobering reality — or allowing a fragile court to stumble through these dilemmas on its own. Why must it change? US under any president doesn't recognize jurisdiction of ICC over it. It doesn't exist, except as a tool of US foreign policy. Definitely not an equal playing field. It is empire vs all. It's the fair reality. Call a spade- a spade Or Trump could not commit crimes against humanity Thought the issue was actions almost 20 years ago,so how is it Trump's directly. This issue is just another anti American overstep by Globalists. Interesting now how each of these anti American harassment is rebuked by an administration that believes in America and protects USA
