An explosion of virtual care during the pandemic is raising expectations that Washington will make sure Americans can continue video chatting with their doctors after the health crisis subsides

But telehealth advocates will have to win over skeptics in Congress, as well as in the Medicare agency itself, who have worried that telehealth is a ripe target for fraudsters or could drive up America’s massive health care tab by encouraging overuse of services. Little data has emerged so far on the broader impact of telehealth's upswing, but advocates are eager to seize on the moment.

“I just can’t imagine going back because people recognize the value of this,” Verma said at an event hosted by Stat News this week. Taking Medicare’s cue, state Medicaid programs and private health insurers also relaxed stricter policies on virtual care. Private health insurance claims for services jumped 4,300 percent in March 2020 compared to the previous year, according to new data from a massive trove of claims data held by the nonprofit Fair Health.

The technology has been especially vital for behavioral health at a time when America is under unprecedented stress, providers say. Doctor on Demand said there’s been an uptick in anxiety and depression patients being treated on its platform.

Why JFK decided to embrace civil rights as a 'moral issue' in 1963: OPINION57 years ago today, John F. Kennedy made one of his most important and enduring orations, an appeal to all Americans to accept civil rights as 'a moral issue ... as old as the scriptures and as clear as the Constitution.' You mean, back when there was actual racism because Democrats opposed Civil Rights, rode with the KK K and supported Segregation? Yes, that JFK would be a Republican today. Believe it! He tried to sanitize the racist history of the Democrat Party. Seems like nobody listened. Too busy admiring the speaker and not hearing the message.
