Why unvaccinated Kyrie Irving is allowed to play at Chase Center

SAN FRANCISCO — Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving is unvaccinated and cannot play home games because of New York City’s vaccine requirements. San Francisco has similar requirements, but Irving is expected to suit up when the Nets face the Warriors on Saturday at Chase Center.

“In contrast to home players, players or other performers who are not employed by the host of the event are exempt from the vaccine verification requirements,” the SFDPH guidelines read. Irving and any other unvaccinated visiting players, instead, must provided proof of a negative test for COVID-19 and are “strongly urged to be up-to-date on vaccination before performing or playing.”

Irving must adhere to other health guidelines while inside Chase Center. Though he is free to make plenty of contact during the game on the court, he must maintain six feet of separation from spectators once inside the arena. He also has to wear a mask when he isn’t playing.
