Why Tom Hanks' portrayal of Mister Rogers is more than just one nice guy playing another

“Waves” and “Just Mercy” directors Trey Edward Shults and Destin Daniel Cretton bring tears and traumas to Toronto, while the terrific Romanian documentary “Collective” strikes a nerve.The 1998 magazine profile focused on Rogers’ remarkable approach to life, ending with writer Tom Junod opening his heart and feeling the grace of God.

Hanks won back-to-back Oscars for “Philadelphia” and “Forrest Gump” in the mid-nineties, but an entire generation has now grown up without seeing him among the nominees. Since his last lead actor nod for “Cast Away” in 2000, Hanks has delivered exceptional work in movies like “Bridge of Spies” and “Captain Phillips.” Voters have looked elsewhere.

During a Q&A following the Elgin screening, Heller stressed the challenges of portraying Rogers, pushing back on the idea that Hanks’ work was simply one nice guy portraying another decent fellow.

I dunno. When I watch the trailer, every time Hanks speaks, I'm reminded of Forrest Gump.

Mister Rogers message of unconditional love, respect, inclusiveness, and dignity for all, was created to be a lesson for adults as much as it was for children. We would be wise to take more away from this film than just entertainment. This is a voice for our time.

Fred? Maybe a nice guy. His TV show was revolting, was boring. Kids considered it punishment. Tom Hanks, makes some fabulous movies. He turned into a crashing Limousine-Liberal- Lecturing Bore. Much like his other boring buddy the Eco-Hypocrite 44. Passing on this retread hype.
