'As fans, we’re fortunate to witness it, warts and 50-point drubbings and all.'

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry reacts after hitting a triple against the Dallas Mavericks at Chase Center on May 20, 2022, in San Francisco.are — admit it, somewhat miraculously — just a single victory away from a slightly-less-than-swaggering return to the NBA Finals. It’s been a messy campaign, as I’ve possibly belabored all season long, but now, undeniably a successful one. This run to the Finals will possibly go down as their most inspiring accomplishment since the 2015 campaign.

And just like that, another very long season of NBA basketball is nearly in the recent-history books. It didn’t turn out exactly how prognosticators might have assumed. Kevin Durant and noted vaccine skeptic Kyrie Irving were swept in the first round.

These Warriors might not. At least, not this incarnation of them, half-steeped in past glory and half unashamedly looking squarely at the future. The balance struck this season worked out more or less but Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green have all looked very mortal more often than ever this year. That’s not a knock; it’s merely called the linear progression of time.

But the regular season version of this team always felt just slightly ajar from their fully formed selves. At their lowest point it seemed a reasonable conclusion they were heading for a first-round exit. Instead, their playoff muscle memory kicked in hard. They’ve risen to the occasion, outlasted the MVP, then a ferocious and deep Grizzlies team, and now they’re on the verge of putting away one of the next faces of the league. They did all this, despite everything that went wrong along the way.
