The Giants' 2019 salary cap picture doesn't look very rosy right now, but with a few strategic moves, general manager Dave Gettleman can get things back on track.

Of that space, they will need roughly $8 million in functional cap space to sign their rookie class , plus general manager Dave Gettleman spoke this week of wanting to have between $8 - $10 million to carry over into the 2019 season for emergencies.

Before anyone panics, the Giants are looking to move edge rusher Olivier Vernon, who would free up $11.5 million once he’s gone . However, it would be hard to imagine him not being willing to help the team by allowing them to move some money around. This would necessitate adding one more year to his deal so that they can take some of his base salary and convert it to a signing bonus which would then be spread over the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

No disrespect to Ellison, who’s a good guy and shows up to do his job, but the fact that he’s the No. 2 tight end and is being paid like the No. 1 tight end is just not a smart allocation of the cap dollars. The Giants have three restricted free agents they will need to decide on.According to, the RFA tenders are $4.407 million ; $3.095 million and $2.025 million .
