Why Stephen King Doesn't Write Sequels (& Why He Still Has)

Stephen King is best known for his many horror stories, and surprisingly, he’s not an author who tends to write sequels to his works, and he has his reasons for that – but he has still written a couple of follow-ups. King’s reign in the horror genre began in 1974 with Carrie, which gave readers a taste of King’s style and the type of characters and stories he likes to tell, but it was his third novel, The Shining, the one that established him as a preeminent author in the horror genre.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT King is the mind behind now classics like IT, Misery, Pet Sematary, and The Dark Tower, and many of his characters have also become part of pop culture, in big part thanks to their adaptation to other media, as is the case of Pennywise, Annie Wilkes, and Randall Flagg.

When Stephen King Has Broken His Sequel Rule Stephen King first broke his sequel rule with The Dark Tower series, formed by eight novels, one short story, and a children’s book, beginning in 1982 with The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger.

At the above-mentioned press conference, King explained that Danny Torrance “never really left his mind” and he got curious, which he says doesn’t happen often to him, and as addiction is “something that tends to run in families”, he thought he would let Danny also struggle with alcoholism and see if he could be better than his father was. Stephen King rarely writes sequels, and while he has broken his rule before, it’s better to not keep hopes high about more sequels.

Real life sequels will haunt StephenKing for the rest of his life. Rage was the perfect blueprint for school shootings yet it didn’t need an AR15 to unleash horror. Too late to ban this book that should never have been written.
