Share to twitterSomeday very soon the Republic of China, also known as Taiwan, will receive formal approval from Washington to move ahead with its biggest purchase of U.S. arms in many years. The package includes over a hundred M1A2 tanks, hundreds of surface-to-air and anti-tank weapons, and the first U.S. fighters Taipei has bought from America since 1992.
Obviously, the Republic of China needs all the help it can get. With 24 million inhabitants, Taiwan is no match for the military prowess of the People’s Liberation Army , which has an annual budget over ten times the size of Taiwan’s defense spending. America is the island’s main supplier of weapons, and there is strong bipartisan support in Congress for continuing to supply Taipei’s defensive needs....
But without control of Taiwan, this defensive perimeter loses much of its value to China’s rivals. If Beijing were to successfully occupy the Republic of China, it would shatter the U.S. defensive posture in the Western Pacific. As General Douglas MacArthur observed during the early days of the Cold War, Taiwan is an “unsinkable aircraft carrier” – nearly 14,000 square miles of territory, much of it suitable for military bases.
