's Ocean Beach was covered in what appeared to be"snow" when viewed from a distance on Friday, but really the white stuff strewn across sands was a frothy foam created by turbulent conditions in the Pacific Ocean.
National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Garcia explained on Friday that the recent storm, dubbed a bomb cyclone, off the West Coast whipped up the ocean, and like whipped cream, the waters"got all foamed up with winds and waves." The"snow" on the beach is like a gift from the storm. It's not completely unusual for this to happen in big storm events, but it's always surprising to look over the white fluff on the beach.
The bomb cyclone that sent heavy rain and dangerous winds to the Bay Area on Wednesday and Thursday also churned up the ocean and delivered monster waves to the coast."All that wind on the backside on that area of the low pressure created all this wave energy, and it’s hitting our coast today, and it’s massive," Garcia toldon a phone call on Thursday.
Weather service forecaster Brayden Murdock said on Friday afternoon the active ocean pattern off the coast of the Bay Area is expected to continue into this evening. In theory, more snow could be pushed up onto the beach. "We have a high surf advisory in effect for the coast through 9 a.m. tonight," Murdock said."We're seeing the potential for up to 20-foot waves at mostly west-facing beaches with the way the swell is coming."
