As Americans debate police reform, a law enforcement report shows significant gaps in how police in the U.S. are trained compared to their international counterparts.

But rather than looking inward, some experts say U.S. law enforcement officials may be better served by looking at the rest of the world for its lessons.

"Almost every major aspect of policing has fundamentally changed in recent decades, except for one: how we train officers," the report states.Police training in the U.S. is most often measured in weeks, while in many other countries it is measured in months or years. In comparison, police recruits in Japan get between 15 and 21 months of training. Police in Germany get 2.5 years of training. And in Finland, police education takes three years to complete.

Much of the training in American police academies emphasizes skills like marksmanship and defensive tactics, with less focus on so-called "soft skills" like communication and crisis intervention.

The US has a history of policing the world they aren't a good example for any civilized nation.

It’s about time the US realize they are not the best! As your article suggests look outward

Israeli occupation

Narrative pushing 🙄

Health care Gun laws Law enforcement Education Labor relations There are a number of ways the U.S. can take lessons from the rest of the industrialized democracies! 🤗

How about parents stop raising thugs and respect authority

'There has to be a national commitment to want to fundamentally train ... and to compensate police at a level that makes them professionals,' First how about we compensate teachers at a level that RECOGNIZES they are professionals?

You're supposed to look at the law.

This country hates change. It’ll never happen.

They don't fall short, we do. We expect them to be everything from our personal protector to marriage counselor to drug recovery expert. Its not something that can be done.

A lot of “police” success in other countries vs USA.

Probably because nobody wants to be a police officer because of the negative stigma behind becoming one

So, national politicized police forces? Is that where you hacks are going with this?

Just another BS article from the liberal media. Do you want proof? Why don’t BLM go to Russia and try tearing that country apart and see what happens

In other countries, Police academy training is 2-3 years compared to only an avg of 6 months, and in some States only 10 weeks in the United States.

Are you OK with this You and most of MSM isn't talking about this horrible Ohio train wreck at all.

America's police departments are full of bullies and thugs while the rest of the world has professional police departments.

America has more freedom. With that freedom is more responsibility. With more responsibility there is more opportunity to do wrong. Thus more requirements for police and longer jail terms. Freedom has a price and responsibility

Most are trained to be Police rather than Peace Officers.

Experts in what?

Maybe don’t be fascists.

Also for guidance on prisons, social welfare, human rights in general.

No thanks. each place is different. we just need citizens to act properly first like they used to do

Because people today don't want to deal with politics in

One guy is wearing his mask below his nose, which is the same as wearing no mask at all! No wonder cops need improvement.

Absolutely. The USA is the only place where the police are routinely out of shape. Annual fitness testing is the norm for police around the world.

The IQ of the average US citizen is 98, 88 in big cities. The average IQ of a police officer is around 105-110.

Does the rest of the world have to deal with 13% of its population that is violent and always breaking the law with impunity, REPEATEDLY? 60% of the crime in the USA is committed by this 13%. THAT IS NOT A POLICE PROBLEM!!

Who would want to be a police officer in the United States the way the media and the Democrat party treats them? Who would want to be a police officer when anyone can make false accusations and then take everything from that police officer financially?

It depends on where policing occurs. There are sections of LA that cops are afraid to go into. Not true in Mayberry!

It comes from the top

Better an eye on the prosecutors not prosecuting and sending criminals back on the streets. Whenever MSM say experts you know it’s bs.

This makes complete sense and is definitely worth trying. So, naturally, we won’t do it.

Proper psychological screening. Most incidents I see are done by tyrants that have no business in policing. Stop forcibly ID'ing everyone you encounter when they are not legally required to do so. Body cams always on, no exceptions.

Its time to put city Mayors and other elected officials behind bars when government forces their responsible for murder people. Hold elected officials accountable. The Mayor of Memphis must be charged.

Wait, now you want police?

You hire military to be cops and you train cops to act as hit squads arm them to the teeth with military grade equipment and give them immunity, you'd think someone would get a clue.

Updating the way police handle themselves doesn't change the type of society we have. They are still going to be dealing with the same issues. It's not going to be society that changes to conform to their training; it's going to be their training that re-conforms back to how…

أمر ما هو مزعجاً عندما يتحدث كثيراً من لا يستطيع فعل شي.

Nah.

America is devolving... while the rest of world eagerly moves foward. Remember, America has selected to further leverage... every person survival to steal a greater existence for the ruling class. Civility has left the building of America.

I kno this will happen. If there’s one thing America is good at it’s learning from others & not assuming it’s best country in the world

nah .. a law enforcement model that might be working in some relatively homogenized country not built on slavery and with no apartheid history wouldnt apply here ..

But that’s pretty much the mistake USA is making on everything. Combined with decades of dumbing down its education, the proliferation of Murdoch media; the result is a democracy becoming increasingly fragile and unstable. It’s not just an internal culture war anymore.

Broken Windows resulted in crime rates dropping like a stone. Made cities safe and livable when they were dangerous places. Lasted for 40 years. Complete ignorance today regarding the ‘before and after’

The rest of the world has it’s own problems

Abso-freaking-lutely.

Trained pigs? I'd like to see that.

Just stop with 'other countries' are doing this. If we had the CULTURE of other countries, we wouldn't be having these conversations. The drug and inner city crime problems need to be resolved before we can ever talk about anything else.

Maybe you should educate Whoopie on that fact instead of permitting her to incite violence against white people🤬

So much ideology here, bring back community police employed by local government.

“Defund police. ACAB” - leftists 3 years running “I’d prefer you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to.” - Col Nathan R Jeassup What did you think would happen?

Most other countries police are trained by and are part of their military. USA is not the world. ComplicitMedia

Because our police began as slave catchers and we have some ridiculous fantasy they make us safer if they are ‘tougher.’

Must be run by the Republicans

American police are doing EXACTLY what they’re trained for, inflicting violence on the community

Maybe because the U.S. is made of multiple States.

No. We're not going to allow you to nationalize law enforcement.

Memphis level of violence (and root causes) must be addressed.

Well nobody will want to become a cop if they have to train outside with masks on.

And other countries are what the USA want to be? Hip hip hurray Our leaders what the USA to be CHINA or RUSSIA. They have no clue Impeachment coming proof in hand. Adam Schiff said he had proof so many times 56 I counted. FBI paid to lie for the DNC.

But do those other countries have the black problem that we have here in the US ?

Since early 90s police hiring in the US has lowered its standards and its changed its training standards. Major PDs are a shell of their former shelf’s Sadly the losers in this is society and the people there suppose to protect and serve.

“Police lack training in the US“ probably because people are peacefully protesting their training centers by setting police cars on fire and vandalizing their buildings…. I do believe it would be hard to train under the circumstances

Wait it’s been the training gap the whole time and not ‘systemic racism’?

Yes, here, outright murder is praised and sexualized by the most popular teachers/trainers

Democrats want to Defund the police

Why is it that, in the rare cases when you report the murder of a police officer, you never report what they liked doing? Sunsets, long walks on beaches, etc. donotrun donotfight AttorneyCrump won’t spread that message because he won’t make any money. ChaseThatAmbulance

Why you shouldn't tell someone to calm down? The phrase 'calm down' is controlling, dismissive, and suggests a person's feelings are invalid. It can also exacerbate anxiety. Apr 21, 2020

The real question is why the public, with an IQ of around 88, thinks they know better than a person with an average IQ of 102-105.

Our media is often corrupt, manipulative, and a failure to society.

The article doesn’t mention the requirements for college credits, or military service before even being selected for an Academy, the field training and probationary period that takes place after the Academy, and many hours of annual inservice training.

In the military, if there's a lapse in unit training the unit's leadership is to blame. Start holding them responsible for their incompetence.

We DON’T need paramilitary police forces.

Not everyone should be considered for the job....psych evaluation would help

Police reform would be simply not to beat anyone to death! Or shoot them out of hand.

There are and always will be individual cases of police brutality, but there is not a systemic police brutality problem.

Police officers in the US are train to kill; whereas, other countries officer are not. This is NOT new.

Because they only want to pay a bit more than $40,000 gross. And they don't want to pay full three years training like in Europe...

Soldiers would be in Leavenworth if we treated afghans like police treat their own citizens

Don’t worry. Under democrats we now fill positions based on virtue signaling and checking off boxes .. standard are no longer a thing

I could have told you that

How, as Asian Americans, do we make sense of senseless shootings in our community?Opinion: Anger turned to shame and, at first, silence as we learned the mass shootings in California were Asian-on-Asian crime. But that's not the way forward. This is revisionist history...no where in this story does it factually report our dishonest media and government officials originally blamed this shooting on whites/white supremacy, and then, when it turned out to be an elderly Asian man, story was pigeonholed/now being retold Angry men It is not about ethnicity, it is about guns.

Opinion | What Americans should know about Haiti’s latest devastating crisisNayyera Haq: Haiti's journey from a groundbreaking country to a failed state is a sordid tale of American exceptionalism threatened by Black progress. Staten Island quality person nayyeroar always means well, but the labeling by this tweet and any piece about Haiti being a “failed state” is just not the best labeling at all. It’s not Haiti’s fault that outside forces, for over centuries, have tried to destroy a great nation. France didn't do anything it was all Americas fault. france, what France? Heh. Escargo? Only if you put gas in. LoL. France. Turns out maintaining an offshore low-wage export platform is harder than it seems.
