The original Planet of the Apes franchise saw two different actors play Cornelius. But what was the reason behind the recast in the first place?

Although most of the stars returned to play their iconic characters in the original Planet of the Apes franchise, the casting for Cornelius went through a tumultuous journey as the character ended up being recast multiple times. The Planet of the Apes movie was loaded with legends of stage and screen, none more storied than British-American actor Roddy McDowall, who starred as Cornelius.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Given McDowall's apparent commitment to the film series , it seems strange that he would not be involved in the original sequel to the wildly popular and influential 1968 classic. The character of Cornelius was integral to the original, and continued to drive the story as the series progressed. Recasting the role was essential when McDowall failed to return for the sequel, which he skipped for an understandable reason.

Planet Of The Apes Recast McDowall Because Roddy McDowall Wasn't Available The plan was for McDowall to return for the sequel, but McDowall was unavailable for Beneath the Planet of the Apes due to a scheduling conflict. During the time that Beneath the Planet of the Apes was scheduled to shoot, McDowall was in England in the pre-production stage of a film he was set to direct--Tam-Lin, a British folk horror film starring Ava Gardner and Ian McShane.

Other Planet Of The Apes Projects Roddy McDowall Appeared In Following the financial success of Beneath the Planet of the Apes, a follow-up was put into production immediately, and released less than a year later. McDowall returned to reprise his role as Cornelius, which was important to the studio given that series staples Charlton Heston and Maurice Evans were not returning for Escape From the Planet of the Apes. McDowall's Cornelius led the film alongside Kim Hunter's Dr.

While Escape From the Planet of the Apes was the final time McDowall would play Cornelius, he continued his involvement with by featuring in several of the Planet of the Apes best projects. He returned in Conquest of the Planet of the Apes as Caesar, the son of Cornelius--largely in the same makeup and costume, but with a far different personality. He reprised the role in the final film in the original Planet of the Apes series, Battle For the Planet of the Apes.
