Since lilial is a synthetic fragrance and not an active ingredient, it doesn't make much of a difference to the efficacy of the formula whether it's present or not. "We removed the non-active and non-functional ingredient without impacting the scent of the product," the brand tellsOlaplex has been in the process of reformulating its product without lilial to follow the EU guideline and since January 2022 no longer sells products containing the ingredient in the U.K. or EU.
"The presence of lilial in an individual product is unlikely to cause significant harm," Dr. Shah says. "But the potential concern is that lilial can be found as an ingredient in several cosmetic and household products, so the aggregate exposure arising from the use of different products together could be considered reprotoxic."So should you toss out products containing lilial? The majority of the experts say that's not necessary.
