Writer Jeremy Slater explains why Disney+'s Moon Knight series didn't feature Werewolf by Night and how the team got around introducing him. The show marked the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of Marc Spector, a mercenary living with dissociative identity disorder who shares his body with multiple alters, including the mild-mannered gift shop employee Steven Grant and a ruthless, mysterious figure named Jake Lockley.
Oscar Isaac led the cast of Moon Knight as the titular hero alongside Ethan Hawke as Farrow, May Calamawy as Layla El-Faouly/Scarlet Scarab, Karim El Hakim, Ann Akinjirin, David Ganly and F. Murray Abraham as the voice of Khonshu. Having premiered in March, the series received generally positive reviews from critics and audiences alike for its shift towards a darker tone and independence of ties from the larger MCU and Isaac and Hawke's performances.
"There weren't discussions of doing Werewolf by Night per se, just because they had already had some plans for him, and Kevin [Feige] had an idea of how he wanted to use him, which I'm still not privy to. I'm as in the dark as you are. In my pitch, one of the images that I used was a shot of Moon Knight fighting a giant, 12-foot-tall werewolf with glowing eyes. I was like, 'Look, yes, Moon Knight is a street-level vigilante guy.
Given their interactions in the comics, it's understandable many believed Werewolf by Night would make his MCU debut in Moon Knight, especially as those behind the show teased it would dive into the world of monsters and horror for the first time in the franchise. Many found their theories further supported by the trailers for the series in which Moon Knight was seen beating a wolf-like creature to a pulp in a museum bathroom.
As Slater notes, while Moon Knight may not have included Werewolf by Night, there are plans for the character in the MCU's near future with Disney+'s Halloween special reportedly being based on the character with Gael Garcia Bernal leading the cast and The Batman composer Michael Giacchino set to direct.
