Jurassic World Dominion director Colin Trevorrow explains why the sequel didn't bring back Lex and Tim Murphy from the original Jurassic Park. The newest Jurassic World sequel still focuses on Chris Pratt's Owen Grady and Bryce Dallas Howard's Claire Dearing, but a big selling point of Trevorrow's film was that it brings back three of the main legacy characters from the original trilogy.
Lex and Tim are John Hammond's grandchildren who had prominent roles in Steven Spielberg's 1993 dinosaur flick. Both characters had brief cameos at the beginning of The Lost World: Jurassic Park when Ian Malcolm visited Hammond at his home, but neither of them has been in the franchise since. With Jurassic World Dominion being the end of the Jurassic World trilogy, and possibly the entire franchise, some were expecting Lex and Tim to make some sort of appearance.
Every one of these characters takes up so much oxygen in every room they step into that we really needed to be careful and thoughtful. I’ve always tried to keep a good sense of when it would start to feel like a Love Boat episode or something. Where it’s just like, “Who’s the special guest in this scene?” And we have five characters [counting Lewis Dodgson] from Jurassic Park. BD Wong has been in all three of these movies, and he’s a major character in this film.
Including Lex and Tim could have been fun cameos for those who have seen the original Jurassic Park, and Universal probably could have gotten them to return if Trevorrow wanted to include the actors. Mazzello is still acting to this day, last appearing in American Crime Story just last year. Richards' last film credit came in 2013, with the Jurassic Park star now a professional painter.
Alan, Ellie, Malcolm, Dodgson, and Wu had sizeable roles in Jurassic World Dominion, so it was probably for the best that Lex and Tim weren't included. With Jurassic World Dominion's story already packed with new and legacy characters, Tim and Lex may have only had small cameos, which would have been criticized for simply being fan service.
