James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson confirm why they finally agreed to make a competition TV show with Prime Video. 007’s Road to a Million was announced earlier this year and is an eight-part race around the world with a Bond-style twist. Contestants will go up against physical obstacles and answer various questions at different locations as they travel the globe. This project had been in the works long before Amazon acquired MGM and is currently in production.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Wilson and Broccoli, the producers who have been at the helm of the Bond franchise since GoldenEye starring Pierce Brosnan, are currently working on finding the performer who will replace Daniel Craig as the famous British spy. Whoever takes over needs to be ready to commit to the world of 007 for at least a decade, as most actors who taken on the role have starred in multiple films, the exception being George Lazenby.
“People have always come to us about doing a TV show, [saying] ‘Oh, you should do a Bond challenge,’ but we always stayed away from it because we didn’t want to put people in danger and have them do dangerous things, because it’s not for members of the public – it’s for trained professionals.” Further details regarding 007’s Road to a Million are yet to be announced, including a potential release date. However, Broccoli adds that "it’s looking really great" so far. Broccoli and Wilson's initial hesitation behind making a James Bond competition show makes sense; anyone who has seen a Bond movie knows the spy pulls off things no mere person can. That the producers were unwilling to put anyone in danger just to expand the franchise is admirable.
The James Bond franchise is extremely popular, and this new series taking the world of secret agents to the smaller screen is an opportunity to draw in other audiences. As the world changes and people lose interest in the womanizing version of James Bond, drawing focus to the other aspects that make his lifestyle so appealing - like the fancy cars and the opportunity to travel - feel like a positive change in the pre-existing context of 007.
