Nancy Pelosi’s hesitation was sensible enough. Polls show that only around a third of Americans support impeachment

“THE FIRST thing they think about when they wake up is impeachment,” said Rick Scott, a Republican senator from Florida, on September 25th, referring to his Democratic colleagues in Congress. Not so. In truth, they have only just begun to warm to the idea of impeaching President Donald Trump.

Those on the left of the party have long argued that Mr Trump’s dealings with Russia offer more than enough justification for his removal from office. But moderates like Nancy Pelosi, the House Speaker, have been reluctant to act. The most recent allegations against Mr Trump, that he abused his office to solicit Ukraine’s help in finding dirt on Joe Biden, the Democratic front-runner, seem to have pushed them over the edge at last .Ms Pelosi’s hesitation is sensible enough.

Punters on PredictIt, an online betting market, reckon that the chance Mr Trump will be impeached in his first term is 50%, up from 25% a week ago. But the chances he will be leaving the White House before 2021 are slim. The implied probability that Mr Trump will be the Republican nominee in 2020 has not changed. Nor have the GOP’s chances of winning the presidential election.

There is a simple explanation for this. Mr Trump’s opponents need only a simple majority in the House of Representatives to impeach, but require two-thirds of the Senate to convict, and remove him from office. Bill Clinton was impeached in his second term for lying under oath and obstructing justice, but was not defenestrated. The Republicans currently control 53 seats out of 100 in the Senate. Convincing 20 of them to cross party lines would be a tall order.

The probability that President realDonaldTrump will be reelected to power hasn't changed either.

It’s too late for GOP to DumpTrump What? Pence gonna lead the ticket?

He's the leader of a sect, a cult. Sects don't change their leaders ever, and if they see their leader go to hell, they go to hell with him.

Fifty fifty

Donald Trump, 'Hold my beer.'

Well, when you start canceling primaries & caucuses in a handful of states.... RIP GOP

US politics level : sub banana republic

more than half of this country is either stupid or don’t pay attention, so I wouldn’t bank too much on polls

The democrats have now blown any chance they might have had to defeat President Trump.

Fake news

About the same percentage that supported impeaching Nixon before impeachment hearings began.

How many of the people who were against impeachment are uninformed? You should ask informed people. All of them would be for impeachment.

Americans from the USA or Americans from other American country? There are 35 countries in America.

By that metric, the invasion of Normandy was not very sensible. Historians estimate that approximately 30% of the French supported the Nazi occupation on the eve of the invasion. So it’s an imbecilic and immoral argument to not impeach.

Polls are ridiculous because they only ask a 1000 people. Trump needs to go or we will lose any kind of credibility, not just in America but in the world. He is laughed at globally- we elected a clown and now we have to put it right and quick

polls didn't break laws, trump and illk did and now are covering up again. it's ridiculous how money folks think this is good for business. The 'little' people will stop spending out of mistrust and probably considerable frustration/anger for it.

Cuz thats what leaders do...

Fox News Tops Rivals in Coverage of Announcement of Donald Trump Impeachment InvestigationFox News topped the news channels in the special coverage Tuesday of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement of an impeachment investigation of President Donald Trump. According to early nu… The means the other networks need to work harder. But for them again I'm in the gym and they have all tv's on Fox automatically, isn't fair to the other networks. Fox still needs to be fine and lose its license for promoting lies. Of course. That's where all the Trump supporters go to get their talking points when there is unfavorable news about realDonaldTrump Well of course look at the competition as bad as FoxNews is there’s no threat from the likes of cnn or msnbc. They both have been busted for being even more fake than FoxNews.
