Why I am still a Catholic — and why that becomes more difficult every day

To write that now seems to beg an explanation. How can I continue to profess the faith within the bounds of an institution so thoroughly corrupted by the gravest of sins? How can I accept the host from the hands of men who themselves may have abused, or covered up for those who did?I owe my faith to my grandmother and the Virgen de Guadalupe.

Then came the child sex abuse crisis. A decade ago, as hundreds of lawsuits were settled by dioceses across the country, it seemed possible the church had at least begun to recognize its responsibility to survivors, that healing could come. But new scandals kept erupting, here and around the globe, and last month Francis fell disappointingly short of committing to full transparency when he addressed the Vatican Summit on Child Protection.

I passed out readings beforehand, including reports about the Vatican meeting. Also, to underscore the ubiquity of the crisis, I gave them an article about the recent release of names of Jesuit clergy implicated by credible allegations of sexual misconduct. Eleven of those on the list had at one time worked at LMU. Two were still alive.

opinion Good. Me too. My faith does not depend on the behavior of others but on my relationship with God. This is strengthened by the church through the Sacraments.

opinion Let me start out by saying that I am an Athiest. I was brought up in the Jewish faith, forced into Massionic Judaism and 10 years latter started going to a non dem church. Through it all I was not happy. I became happiest when I decided that I need to believe in myself first.

opinion Religion can be useful as something to hold onto through tough times. Good for providing a moral compass and developing a sense of right and wrong. Too often the religion uses the pulpit for ulterior motives becoming poisonous.

opinion I get it. I've always considered myself an evangelical Christian, but the way Church leaders and so-called Christians have behaved, I want no association with them. I love Jesus, not the acts of those who use his name for political gain and power.

opinion Yeah, supporting a religion that covers up systemic child sexual abuse deserves an explanation. Might as well defend NAMBLA.
